What they needed
Montrose County School District serves 5,000 students in western Colorado, and is the second-largest rural school district in the state. It serves a community that is known as an outdoor recreation hot spot, with Black Canyon National Park and the San Juan Mountains within easy reach. When we met MCSD, the team had a comprehensive wellbeing strategy to support staff, including counseling to support mental wellbeing, wellness packages for staff (ski tickets, massages, etc.) and an all-year fitness challenge to ensure staff at all levels of fitness are moving and feeling connected.

District leadership was focused on supporting people to get and stay moving, whether that was walking, biking or swimming. However, the strategy they were using to manage their fitness challenges just wasn’t easy enough for staff to use and for them to hit their high participation goals.

How we helped
Reward Gateway | Edenred worked with the team at MCSD to move their wellbeing challenges onto their new system. All participants in their new program can participate in group or individual chats, can track their movement using any number of wearable devices and can set and track their success towards their monthly step goals. In addition to those monthly individual goals, participants get access to larger group challenges.
For some of the challenges they ran (e.g. Trek to Wellness, Climb the Peaks, etc.), the MCSD team used pre-existing templates to easily set up a challenge, and for others they created their own custom challenge. Additionally, given the amount of emails their staff usually get, the ability to send announcement through the app meant communications were more likely to be seen by participants.
While the temporary challenges do a lot to promote the program, MCSD’s goals of improving life for their employees align well with supporting a consistent movement goal. The individual nature of the goals also means that all staff – from those just starting a fitness journey to those that bike or hike all the time – can have a reasonable goal to strive for. For any staff that increased their monthly step goal and then hit it, were entered to win massages.
“The Reward Gateway | Edenred app creates a wellness ecosystem we can maintain ourselves.” - Ben Stephenson, Recruiting, Retention and Wellness Coordinator

What they achieved
In the most recent school year, MCSD ran five challenges that attracted 350 (47%) of their staff to register. They had 57% of their staff hit their monthly step goals, and their team collectively stepped for more than 447 million steps throughout the school year! There were 574 friendship connections made within the participant group. The program is one successful part of the much larger effort to improve the quality of life for all the staff within the school district.
“Take it slow and understand you won’t get 100% participation, but for those that do, it benefits them. And as you create challenges it will encourage more and more people to join.” - Ben Stephenson, Recruiting, Retention and Wellness Coordinator
